In the scene, Ruan Mei’s fingertips lightly reach the frame as her gaze meets the mirror image. Inner and outer mirror motifs are rendered with an artistic cone of light — two faces so close they almost touch, separated by the distance of time. Her matted hair falls freely, the white shawl slips from her hand and gathers in delicate folds as she silently contemplates her reflection.
