Yoshi is Mario's faithful companion in the plumber's quest to rescue Princess Peach and stop Bowser's evil plans. Originally conceived as a Koopa-like creature, Yoshi's character design evolved into the dinosaur-like figure we know today. The shell became a saddle that Mario can ride.

In addition to Mario's ability to shoot fireballs with the Fire Flower and become briefly invulnerable with the Super Star, Yoshi's special powers make them an effective team. Yoshi can swallow enemies with his long tongue and gain special effects depending on what he eats, or lay them in eggs that can be thrown as projectiles or open power-ups for Mario, depending on the game.

After all these years, Mario is still the face of Nintendo, and since Yoshi's debut, our green friend has become a given and beloved part of the Mario world.
