Yoshi is Mario's faithful companion on the plumber's adventure to rescue Princess Peach and thwart Bowser's evil plans. Originally conceived as a Koopa-like form, Yoshi's design evolved into the dinosaur-like friend we know and love today. The shell was transformed into a saddle for Mario to sit on.

In addition to Mario's well-known ability to shoot fireballs with the Fire Flower and temporary invulnerability with the Super Star, the duo is made extra effective by Yoshi's unique powers. Yoshi can swallow enemies with his extendable tongue and transform them into special abilities depending on what he's swallowed, or lay them in eggs that can be used as projectiles or as power-ups for Mario - depending on the game.

Mario has become Nintendo's most recognizable icon over the years, and since Yoshi's debut, the green dinosaur has become an obvious and beloved part of the Mario series.
